The reactions of The Voice Kids Philippines’ first winner Lyca Gairanod and TV journalist Karen Davila on the latter’s YouTube channel, have now become a trending meme in social media. But, apart from their shocked and surprised faces, there are other footages from Karen’s interview worth sharing. And one is Lyca’s unconditional love for her grandmother Ledesma Epe.

In the said vlog, Lyca revealed the reasons why she sold the house she won from the singing competition seven years ago. “Gusto ko lang talaga yung ganitong life, masaya po. Ayaw ko po ng tahimik, yung wala kong naririnig na ingay. (I just really like this kind of life, it’s fun. I’m not used to a quiet environment),” her initial answer to Karen when asked why she moved back to Tanza, Cavite.
“Yung bahay naman po na yon ay pinahalagahan ko po talaga. Marami po kong memories na binuo sa house na iyon (I also valued that house. We made lots of memories there),” she continued. “Para po kay lola, gusto niya kami makasama, kaso malayo po kami. Pero dinala namin siya sa house na yon, kaso umuwi po siya. Ayaw n’ya po sa bahay na yon, ang tahimik daw (However, our lola wants us to be with her, but we’re too far. We brought her there but she went back home. She didn’t like it there because, according to her, it's too quiet),”
Also a YouTuber with million-plus subscribers, Lyca confirmed Karen's conclusion that her main reason for settling back to her hometown in exchange for keeping the grand prize house and subdivision lot is to be closer to her 86-years-old grandmother who helped her parents raise her.
After touring Karen in her current home, Lyca also brought ABS-CBN’s broadcaster to her grandma’s house near the coast where she had her humble beginnings. Before going inside, Lola Ledesma told Karen that she will live there until she passes away.
The small house, which is made from recycled materials, has withstood nature’s wrath several times. But beyond that, it serves many precious memories to Lyca while growing up and especially to her grandmother who’s been residing there for 41 years.
Lyca, who’s a lola’s girl, planned to renovate the old house, but they were advised to delay the construction due to heavy waves from the ocean.
In Lyca’s vlog last year, she shared that granting her lola’s wish to continue living there is another reason why they kept the house. “Gusto niya talaga dito. Gusto niya ng maaliwalas. Gusto niya ng mahangin. Gusto niya nakakarinig ng dagat. Alam niyo na, diba kung ano ang kasiyahan ng lola natin, ibigay natin (She really like it here. She likes to be cozy. She likes ventilated. She likes the sound of the sea. You know, whatever makes our grandmothers’ happy, let’s give it to them),” she explained.
Lola Ledesma served as the family’s midwife to bring Lyca and her siblings out into this world. She was also the young singer's guardian while Lyca’s parents were at work.
Thus, for the former trash trader, she was so fortunate to have Lola Ledesma who takes care of and supports her until now. According to Lyca, her granny’s love perhaps is the reason why she has a soft spot for old people.
Towards the end of Karen’s vlog, Lyca dedicated a song “Iingatan Ka,’’ the theme song of the movie “Tanging Yaman,” which was performed by Carol Banawa. It holds a message of giving back love and care for mothers who raise us up.
