BGC-Ortigas road link construction on track despite ECQ, says Villar

The completion of the 565-meter viaduct of the Bonifacio Global City (BGC)-Ortigas Center Road Link remains on track despite the restrictions caused by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

According to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, the viaduct traversing Lawton Avenue up to the entrance of BGC will be finished by September this year.

"The construction of viaduct and approach 3 along BGC’s 8th Avenue is now at an accelerated pace to meet the September completion target," Villar said following an inspection Tuesday, August 17.

"This project will soon provide motorists a much different travel experience between Ortigas and BGC," he added.

Undersecretary Emil Sadain said the DPWH has already completed the deck slab of main viaduct from pier 13 to pier 22. Meanwhile, the installation of deck slab reinforcements at pier 22 to abutment 3 including median, sidewalk, and parapet reinforcements are ongoing.

"Although community quarantine is in place, DPWH and contractor Persan Construction Inc. have continued the work along the stretch of 8th Avenue from the Kalayaan Avenue intersection taking into consideration the construction health and safety protocols," Sadain said.

Once the Lawton Avenue to the Global City Viaduct section is fully completed, it will provide direct access from Ortigas Center heading towards the Kalayaan Bridge to Bonifacio Global City.

The entire 1.481-kilometer BGC-Ortigas Road Link Project includes the Kalayaan Bridge, which was opened last June 12; road improvements on Brixton and Fairlane Streets; and the Lawton Avenue–Global City Viaduct. It is expected to reduce the usual one-hour travel time between BGC and Ortigas Center to a mere 12 minutes.
