Advocacy group condemns killing of curfew violator in Tondo
An advocacy group has condemned the killing of a curfew violator, allegedly with mental illness, in Tondo.

On Aug. 7, Eduardo Geñoga, 59, was shot dead by Cesar Panlaqui, 55, a village guard (barangay tanod) along Tayuman Street during the second day of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila.
In a statement released Aug. 16, Youth for Mental Health Coalition (Y4MH) expressed outrage over the shooting of Geñoga.
"While law enforcement authorities have the duty to carry out and implement the law in order to maintain the harmonious relations of society, no one has the authority to take a life," Y4MH said.
"If this man was creating loud noises in the middle of the night and approached the tanod with a stick, was shooting him the proportionate response? Indeed, the thoughtless act of the barangay tanod produced more disturbance than peace during that fateful night in Tondo," it added.
Y4MH likewise cautioned reporters against the "sensationalization of a mental health condition."
"Putting the words 'violator with mental illness' or 'mentally ill man' without elaborating on the mental health condition's relation to the shooting is misleading for the readers, as it adds no additional value to the main incidents," the group said.
Y4MH said it is closely monitoring the development of the investigation and demanded authorities to urgently address the incident with the appropriate action.
"We strongly demand for justice and we reiterate our call that while peace and order must be upheld, such must not cost a human life."
