OCTA Research: 9 Metro Manila cities saw 'rapid' growth in COVID-19 cases in past week

Independent research group OCTA has observed a "rapid" growth in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in nine cities in Metro Manila over the past week.

Rapid one-week growth rates were observed in Navotas (98 percent), Caloocan (80 percent), Muntinlupa (74 percent), Mandaluyong (65 percent), Quezon City (59 percent), Manila (58 percent), Marikina (56 percent), Las Piñas (51 percent), and Valenzuela (50 percent), based on OCTA's monitoring from Aug. 9 to 15.

In terms of average daily attack rate (ADAR) or incidence rate,

Twelve local government units (LGUs) were also at "critical risk," in terms of average daily attack rate (ADAR) or incidence rate. This refers to the number of new daily cases per 100,000 population.

The areas that are at critical risk due to high ADAR are Navotas (44.72), Makati (39.25), Pateros (39.02), San Juan (36.23), Pasay (31.88), Muntinlupa (29.61), Mandaluyong (27.21), Valenzuela (26.75), Parañaque (26.59), Malabon (26.24), Pasig (26.12), and Las Piñas (25.99).

Moreover, six LGUs had their intensive care unit occupancy for COVID-19 cases at a critical level.

These were Pateros (100 percent), San Juan City (100 percent), Marikina City (94 percent), Muntinlupa City (93 percent), Las Piñas City (93 percent), and Taguig City (92 percent).

OCTA said that Metro Manila's overall seven-day average of new cases was up by 51 percent over the past week.

Its daily average was 3,262 cases from Aug. 9 to 15.

Metro Manila's one-week ADAR was at 23.26 cases per day per 100,000 population, which puts Metro Manila under high-risk classification.

The positivity rate in Metro Manila has increased to 20 percent. Its ICU bed occupancy was 71 percent and hospital bed occupancy for COVID was 63 percent.
