AstraZeneca vaccine provides yearlong protection vs severe COVID-19 infection - vaccine expert
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine produced by British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca provides yearlong protection against the severe form of coronavirus infection, the country’s Vaccine Expert Panel (VEP) said Monday, Aug. 16.

Citing published data, VEP head Dr. Nina Gloriani said the AstraZeneca jab provides the “longest protection” against the severe form of COVID-19 compared to other vaccines available in the country.
“Ang AstraZeneca ang may pinakamahaba, published data ito, kasi yung iba press releases lang ito published data, so one year itong sa AstraZeneca (AstraZeneca has the longest, it’s published data, because the others are only press releases, it’s published data, so it’s one year with AstraZeneca),” she said during the Laging Handa public briefing on Monday.
“Kaya wag po tayo magmadali sa pagboboost at wag tayong maghopping at shopping (Let not rush into receiving booster shots and let us not engage in vaccine hopping and shopping).”
She said based on available data, the level of antibodies wanes from China’s Sinovac before six months, but after getting a booster, it increases which means the presence of memory cells.
She further noted that protection from Pfizer and Moderna vaccines also diminished after six months, while Janssen has “eight-months data showing there is robust antibody response and T-cell response.”
Of the more than 412 million COVID-19 vaccine doses received by the Philippines, a total of 7,849,740 are AstraZeneca jabs.
