The majority of children who contracted coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and were admitted at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) recovered from the viral illness, the hospital's spokesperson said Sunday, Aug. 15.

As of Sunday, PGH, the country's largest COVID-19 referral center, has eight COVID-19 patients occupying its 12-bed pediatric ward, with four more patients waiting to be admitted, said Dr. Jonas del Rosario.
"Ang maganda naman po kahit naging severe o critical yung mga bata, majority po talaga nakaka-recover. It might take a longer time (The good thing is that even if children become severe or critical, the majority really recovers. It might just take a longer time)," Del Rosario said in an interview with TeleRadyo.
PGH's pediatric patients' ages range from a few days old up to 15 years old, he noted.
"Nung tiningnan ko po yung aming data, yung amin pong case fatality rate sa bata ay six percent so medyo okay yun, medyo mababa-baba. Kaya lang minsan nagkakasakit sila nang mas severe (When I looked at our data, our case fatality rate in children was at six percent, that's pretty okay, a bit low. However, sometimes they show severe illness)," Del Rosario added.
Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of the Philippines President Dr. Mary Ann Bunyi said children with underlying medical illnesses are "more vulnerable" to severe COVID-19.
