Ateneo's philosophy professor Fr. Roque Ferriols dies at 96
Jesuit priest Fr. Roque Angel Jamias Ferriols SJ, who established the Bachelor of Arts Philosophy program at the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), has died. He was 96 years old.

An announcement about Ferriols' passing was made by AdMU on Facebook early Sunday, Aug. 15.
"Dr. Leo Garcia has just sent word that at 12:24 a.m., August 15, 2021, on the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, our dearest Fr. Roque Angel Jamias Ferriols SJ passed on to eternal life. He celebrates his 97th birthday in heaven on August 16, 2021," the university wrote.
Fondly known as "Padre Roque," he promoted the teaching of philosophy in Filipino, which also led him to translate, edit, and write various books.
"More important and more lasting, however, is his determination to impart the necessity of pagmumuni-muni--of genuine thinking on one's situation, to his students," Ferriols' biography on the AdMU website read.
His four books, "Mga Sinaunang Griyeyo," "Pre-Socratics to Aristotle," "Magpakatao," and "Pambungad sa Metapisika and Pilosopiya ng Relihiyon" earned him National Book Awards from the Manila Critics' Circle.
Ferriols had taught in AdMU for over 40 years.
In 1989, the university conferred him with the Gawad ng Tanglaw ng Lahi.
