Palace orders PhilHealth: Settle hospital claims now

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has been directed anew to settle its outstanding obligations to accredited hospitals to ensure the uninterrupted treatment of coronavirus patients in the country.

The latest reminder was issued by President Duterte to PhilHealth president Dante Gierran following the reportedly high number of unpaid hospital claims owed by the state-owned corporation.

A group of private hospitals earlier expressed concern that delayed reimbursements might disrupt the salary of their health care personnel and capacity to buy medical equipment amid surging coronavirus cases.

"Paulit-ulit na itong sinasabihan si Atty. Gierran. Kinakailangan bayaran ang pagkakautang na 'yan dahil kapag hindi natin binayaran 'yan hindi puwedeng magpatuloy ang mga pribadong ospital na gamutin ang mga nagkakasakit sa covid at hindi sapat ang ating pampublikong ospital (We have repeatedly told Atty. Gierran to settle the claims because if these are not paid the private hospitals cannot continue treating patients with COVID and we don't have enough public hospitals)," Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said during a televised press briefing.

"So ang panawagan uli ng Presidente and I'm sure si Atty. Gierran will listen to this kinakailangan na bayaran yan sa mabilis na panahon (So the President's appeal is, I'm sure Atty. Gierran will listen to this, the claims must be paid as soon as possible)," he said.

Roque said Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea already held meetings with PhilHealth officials to address the issue on unpaid hospital claims.

"We need to see results now," he said.

PhilHealth recently said it has a total of P166 billion for the 13.6 million claims made by accredited government and private hospitals since last year. The amount represented 76.4 percent of the 18 million claims it received as of June 30, 2021.
