On International Youth Day, NYC stresses youth's role in protecting human life, planetary health

On International Youth Day, Aug. 12, the National Youth Commission (NYC) stressed the youth's role in protecting human life and planetary health for the generations to come.

In a Facebook video message, NYC Chairperson Ryan Enriquez urged the youth to focus their attention on food systems and planetary health as the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic "threatens our very survival."

"You, our young people, our future generation, have a big role to play in the success of our global effort to come up with viable systems that promote overall health," Enriquez said.

"In your hands lies the key to a tomorrow where everyone has enough food on the table. And we don't stop at having just enough. You, the leaders of tomorrow, must make sure these sources of sustenance protect the most important resources of all: the human life," he continued.

Enriquez also encouraged the youth to promote biodiversity and fight climate change.

"We are urging the youth to engage in backyard gardening and create urban gardens. We're not just eyeing food sustenance, we're also targeting economic survival," he added.

"Remember ours is an agricultural country. We must invest in crops and develop future farmers among the youth."

This year's theme of the International Youth Day centers on "Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health."

Observed annually every Aug. 12, International Youth Day is celebrated to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding the youth.
