COVID-19 vaccination benefits 'far outweigh risks' - UP-Manila college dept. faculty, staff

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of the Philippines-Manila College of Medicine urged people to get vaccinated against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as the benefits of getting inoculated outweigh the risks.

In statement issued Thursday, Aug. 12, the department’s faculty and staff expressed support to “evidence-based approaches” in addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which includes vaccination.

“Based on our evaluation of the evidence, the benefits of the vaccination far outweigh the risks,” the statement read.

“We encourage all Filipinos to get vaccinated and to consult physicians with whom they can have balanced discussions of the various interventions for COVID-19 treatment and prevention,” it added.

Also on Thursday, the Department of Health (DOH) reiterated that COVID-19 vaccines provide protection against hospitalization and death against the viral illness.

The Health department issued the statement amid circulating video featuring a certain Dr. Romeo Quijano who disapproves the use of COVID-19 vaccines.

“The DOH condemns health professionals who have been spreading false information regarding life-saving interventions such as COVID-19 vaccines,” the DOH said.

“It is especially irresponsible as the country continues to face the threat of the more infectious Delta variant,” it added.
