Construction suspended at gas leak explosion site in BGC, Taguig

The construction of a building in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig is temporarily suspended following a gas leak explosion that injured one person Wednesday night.

“Construction in the site will remain suspended pending investigation and safety assessment,” the Taguig City government said in a statement.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Taguig, the fire started at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 at a building owned by Leechiu that is being constructed at the corner of 20th and 21st Drives in BGC.

Firefighters raised the first alarm at 7:40 p.m. and the fire was put under control at 9:06 p.m. and put out at 9:35 p.m.

The BFP-Taguig said the origin of the fire was at the MJ Fort Construction. Damage to property was estimated at P200,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the BFP said.

It identified the injured as Melchor Dela Cruz, 35, who suffered third degree burns in the face and other parts of his body. An ambulance rushed him to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in BGC for treatment.

The Taguig City government identified Dela Cruz as an on-duty project safety officer and said “he is in stable condition. No fatalities were reported from the incident.”

“The Taguig City Government assured the public that there is no cause for alarm following a fire that gutted a construction site on 21st Drive in BGC, Taguig City, past 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Initial reports reveal that a construction worker accidentally struck a gas pipe, resulting in a blast that caused the fire,” the city government said.

It added, “The subsequent fire was also confined to the site of construction but for safety reasons, evacuation was carried out for the surrounding commercial properties.”

A total of 73 fire trucks and seven ambulances responded to the gas leak explosion.
