Jimmy Alapag returns as Sacramento Kings assistant coach in Summer League

Jimmy Alapag made his return as a part of the Sacramento Kings coaching staff in the ongoing NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

The Gilas Pilipinas legend is one of six assistants of Kings Summer League coach Bobby Jackson, his first coaching gig since decided to leave the Philippines last September.

It is the second Kings stint for Alapag, who also had the same position during the 2019 Summer League upon invitation by then-general manager Vlade Divac.

The Kings took time to introduce Alapag to their fans through social media with a thread that mentions his past accomplishments in the PBA and Gilas.

“The Captain becomes a King,” the Kings said on its Twitter account.

Alapag last coached in 2020 with San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in the ASEAN Basketball League before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A few months later, Alapag, wife LJ Moreno and three children — Ian Maximus, Keona and Calen — decided to pack their bags for the US to start a new chapter.

But Alapag, whose decision was aimed at seeking opportunities to coach in the US, clarified then that the move isn’t permanent.

Sacramento won its first two games in the Summer League, a mini-tournament for NBA draft picks, young players and free agents, after defeating Charlotte and Washington.
