NCR residents urged: Skip outdoor exercises to avoid COVID

Malacañang has appealed to residents of Metro Manila to temporarily skip their outdoor morning exercises during the strict lockdown this month to avoid getting infected with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

According to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, the Metro Manila mayors have decided to impose such restriction in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The Palace, he said, would defer to the decision of the local government units.

Metro Manila has reverted to enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) since August 6 as the government struggles to contain the virus spread fueled by the highly transmissible Delta strain. The lockdown restrictions, including stay-at-home rule except for going to work in permitted offices as well as getting food and other essential, will stay until August 20, 2021.

"Ito po iyong pagkakataon na ang Presidente nagdi-defer sa mga lokal na pamahalaan. Sila po kasi ang nagpapatupad noong ating mga quarantine. So kapag sa tingin nila na importante na 10 days na lang naman ay sa bahay na muna tayo, sumunod na po tayo (This is the instance the President defers to the local government units. They implement our quarantine measures. So when they think it is important for us to stay home for 10 days, let's follow them)," Roque said during a televised press briefing Tuesday, August 10.

"Kung wala naman pong mga mayor, wala din pong magpapatupad ng mga IATF (Inter Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases) resolutions (If there are no mayors, no one will implement the IATF resolutions)," he added.

Metro Manila Council has passed a resolution prohibiting outdoor exercise amid the surging active cases of coronavirus in the capital region. The decision was announced by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chair Benhur Abalos during a meeting with President Duterte and other top government officials on the pandemic response Monday, August 9.

Abalos said the ban on outdoor exercises will be reviewed after the ECQ implementation in Metro Manila.

Based on the Department of Health tracker, Metro Manila has recorded 573,136 COVID-19 cases, including 20,470 active cases and 8,437 deaths as of August 9.

Prior to the Metro Manila mayors' decision, the government allowed metro residents to walk, run, ride a bicycle, and perform other outdoor exercises in the morning during the ECQ. The outdoor exercises were permitted from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
