Palace celebrates Marcial's victory in Olympics

Malacañang was elated as Filipino boxer Eumir Marcia bagged the country's third medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Sunday, August 1.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after Marcial booked a spot in the semifinal round after knocking out Armenia's Arman Darchinyan in their quarterfinal match in the men’s middleweight division of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In a statement, Roque said Malacañang was one with the Filipino people in celebrating the 23-year-old boxer's triumph in the sports event, especially as he clinched the country's third Olympic medal this year.

"We congratulate Eumir Marcial for securing the Philippines' third Olympic medal when he defeated his opponent in the men's boxing middleweight quarterfinals today, August 1, 2021, at the Tokyo Olympics," he said.

The Palace official enjoined the public in supporting Marcial and the other Filipino athletes in their Olympics journey.

"Let us continue supporting and cheering Eumir and other Filipino athletes in their quest for gold," Roque said.

"Mabuhay ka, Eumir. Go for gold!" he added.

Marcial will next fight Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine on August 5.

On Saturday, Malacañang was filled with glee as Filipino athletes Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, and Carlos Paalam won in their respective events on July 31.

Petecio won the women’s boxing featherweight semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics and securing at least an Olympic Silver medal for the Philippines.

EJ Obiena, meanwhile, lept into the finals of the Men's Pole Vault after finishing inside the Top 12 for clearing 5.75 meters on his third attempt to join the qualifiers.

Carlo Paalam clinched a quarter-finals ticket in the men's boxing flyweight class after scoring a unanimous decision win against fourth-seeded Mohamed Flissi of Algeria in their Round of 16 bouts.

On July 26, the Philippines won its first Olympic Gold medal after Hidilyn Diaz emerged victorious at the 55kg in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics weightlifting competition.
