Comelec says almost 900K register as voters in Visayas

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has received almost 900,000 applications for voter registration in the Visayas region.

Comelec - Education and Information Department (EID) Assistant Director Frances Arabe said a total of 893,448 applications were received in Regions 6 to 8 from September 1, 2020 to July 24, 2021.

"Visayas is doing great. The registrants are constantly coming in," she said in a townhall forum Friday, July 30.

"For this month of July only, we have 53,990 applicants just for Regions 6 to 8. This will show you, more or less, the figures we get every month," added Arabe.

The poll official said they expect the number to still increase as the September 30 deadline for voter registration nears.

"We expect to have more as we approach the deadline for the registration," said Arabe.

"As the deadline approaches, more and more people will be going to our office to register," she added.

Arabe appealed to qualified voters not to wait for the last minute to register.

"Please go out and register. We are assuring all of you that it is safe to go to our offices to register," she said.

"Let us not wait for the deadline. Let us visit our local Comelec offices or go to Robinsons malls for the satellite registration," added Arabe.

On Saturday, Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said as of July 10, there are already around 5.45 million registrants for the May 2022 polls.
