Underwater garbage: Over 300 kilos of trash, marine debris collected in Boracay clean-up drive

More than 300 kilograms of assorted trash and marine debris were collected by divers of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in a simultaneous underwater clean-up drive in Boracay Island, Aklan, it said on Thursday, July 8.

In celebration of the 38th founding anniversary of the PCG District Western Visayas last July 3, personnel of PCG Station Aklan, Special Operation Unit (SOU) – Aklan, PCG Sub-Station Boracay, and volunteer divers of Boracay Business Administration of Scuba Shops have joined the marine environmental protection initiative held at approximately 1,500 square meters of Boracay's coastline.

The PCG said the initiative contributed to the preservation of biodiversity and raising environmental consciousness among locals.

“It also served as an opportunity to make a difference in the global movement of reducing waste thrown to bodies of water by getting rid of trash and/or debris at the shoreline and at the bottom of the sea as these compounds cause harm to marine animals through ingestion and entanglement.,” the PCG said.

The Coast Guard also encouraged the public to support marine environmental protection initiatives to fight against climate change, biodiversity loss, and health risks amid coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
