PCG: No oil spill detected after vessel collision at Manila South Harbor

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) assured the public Friday, July 9, that no oil spill happened in the aftermath of a collision between a cargo ship that contained 3,000 liters of oil and a utility foreign vessel at the Manila South Harbor.

PCG spokesperson Commodore Armand Balilo said the 3,000 liters of "ordinary" oil diesel from cargo vessel MV Palawan Pearl will immediately "dissipate" under the heat of the sun if it possibly leaked.

“Wala pa tayong namomonitor na oil spill doon sa area at ang laman nito na 3,000 litro ng diesel hindi dapat tayo mangamba sapagkat ito ay ordinaryong diesel na kung sakaling tatagas ito, nagdi-dissipate ito under the heat of the sun so nawawala at sa lakas din ng alon (We have not yet monitored an oil spill in the area and we should not worry about the 3,000 liters of diesel content because it is an ordinary diesel and in case it leaks, it will dissipate under the heat of the sun and huge waves),” Balilo said in an interview over GMA’s Unang Hirit.

“Ang engine oil naman nito ay kakaunti lamang at iyon ang imo-monitor at kokolektahin natin kung sakaling tumagas (It had also a small amount of engine oil and that is what we will monitor and collect in case it leaks),” he added.

According to initial investigation, MV Palawan Pearl was travelling from Commander’s Wharf at Baseco Compound en route to El Nido, Palawan, while the foreign utility vessel BKM 104 was sailing in Manila Bay anchorage area to Bulacan when the incident occurred around 2 a.m. Thursday.

The incident left MV Palawan Pearl resting half-submerged in the area, which had 3,000 liters of diesel oil in its oil storage.

The PCG spokesperson said authorities have already interviewed the crew members of the cargo vessel, while they are set to interview today the crew members of the foreign utility vessel as part of the investigation.

The foreign utility vessel BKM 104, registered under the flag of Cyprus, was contracted to conduct dredging and other land development activities in the implementation of the New Manila Airport.

Balilo said PCG personnel have installed oil spill boom in the area, while a PCG ship was also nearby and monitoring the vessels in the area.
