Vaccine 'drought' over as another 2M AstraZeneca jabs arrive in PH

More than two million doses of AstraZeneca coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines were delivered to the country on Friday afternoon, July 9.

According to the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19, a total of 2,028,000 vaccines arrived at Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City around 4 p.m. aboard Emirates Airlines flight EK 332.

The vaccines were donations from the global vaccine initiative known as the COVAX facility.

Friday's shipment was the second consecutive delivery of COVID-19 vaccines in the country following a series of delays in the first week of the month that caused NTF chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. to apologize to the public.

On Thursday night, a total of 1,124,100 AstraZeneca vaccines were also donated by the Japanese government to the Philippines.

With the latest deliveries, the vaccine supply rose to 20,607,570 doses. More than 12.7 million of these doses have already been administered nationwide, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

Meanwhile, Russia will deliver a total of 170,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines in two batches on Friday and Saturday night.

The first batch containing the shipment of 132,200 doses will be transported via a Qatar Airways flight around 10:30 p.m. of July 9.

The second batch containing 37,800 doses will be delivered via an Emirates Airlines flight around 10 p.m. of July 10.
