Keep dry! MMDA designates emergency lay-by on EDSA for motorcycle riders

Motorcycle riders will find this move from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) very thoughtful, especially with the intermittent rains.

The agency unveiled on Friday, July 9 its emergency lay-by at the ground level of the Quezon Avenue flyover on EDSA where motorcycle riders can seek shelter during heavy downpours.

MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said that with the emergency lay-by, motorcycle riders now have a spot when they can temporarily park at when its raining hard so they do not end up blocking the highway.

“We understand the plight of motorcycle riders when they have to stop in the middle of the road while waiting for the rain to stop, it’s very risky for them because they might get into a road accident. At least with the emergency lay-by, they can take cover during heavy rains,” said Abalos, who personally led Friday morning's event.

The emergency lay-by has allotted spaces for motorcycle riders to use, with designated entrance and exit signs.

But Abalos clarified that the emergency lay-by is for rain shelter only, and that MMDA personnel will be assigned at the area to prohibit unnecessary parking.

"Motorcyclists would be allowed to stay only when it is raining. No parking shall be allowed or they shall receive violation ticket for illegal parking,” said Abalos.

The MMDA head honcho said more emergency lay-bys for motorcycle riders will also be established under other falong EDSA, specifically GMA Kamuning, Kamias, Santolan/Crame, Ortigas, Buendia, Tramo (left turning), and Roxas Boulevard.

Similar lay-bys will also be designated along C5 Road, Roxas Boulevard, Alabang Road, Paranaque-Sucat Road, and Chapel Road.

The MMDA will also put up pocket gardens under flyovers as part of its continuing effort to improve the urban aesthetics of the metropolis and fight urban decay.

The project involves planting ornamental plants to beautify the surroundings and help reduce air pollution.
