'Iron Man' actor Robert Downey Jr. announces passing of father

Robert Downey Sr., an American actor, director, producer, writer, cinematographer, has passed away. He was 85.

The news was confirmed by his son, "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr.

On Instagram, the 56-year-old seasoned actor-producer said that his dad passed "peacefully" in his sleep after years of enduring the "ravages of Parkinson's."

"...he was a true maverick filmmaker, and remained remarkably optimistic throughout..According to my stepmoms calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years," he said. "Rosemary Rogers-Downey, you are a saint, and our thoughts and prayers are with you."

Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg, Sean Hayes, among others, extended their condolences.
