Upgrade of Laoag International Airport continues with new admin building

Officials from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) have inaugurated the newly-constructed CAAP admin building at Laoag International Airport (LIA).

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade and CAAP Director General Jim Sydiongco led the inauguration ceremony, which took place Thursday, July 8.

"Here in CAAP, we want to provide comfort and convenience not only to our passengers, but also to our employees. With Laoag International Airport's new admin building, our CAAP employees are being equipped with facilities that will enable them to do their jobs more efficiently while also providing them workspace that is safe and motivating," Sydiongco said.

The two-story admin building was built to the tune of P13.9 million. The construction period ran from December 10, 2019 to December 23, 2020, meaning the majority of works took place amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Newly furnished areas for the finance office, disbursement office, as well as a conference room were also set up in LIA.

Several completed projects at LIA also include the construction of a new powerhouse, expansion and rehabilitation of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), expansion of apron and rehabilitation of the airport runway.

Also ongoing are the asphalt overlay and site acquisition works in Laoag, which are expected to be completed this year.

Prior to the improvement of the airport’s PTB, the then-combined domestic and international passenger areas could only accommodate 140 passengers. Now, the international area alone can accommodate 200 passengers, while the domestic area can accommodate 240 passengers at any given time.

Thursday's event was also joined by CAAP Deputy Director General for Administration BGen. John Estabillo, AFP (Ret.), CAAP Area I Manager Ronald Estabillo, Metro Ilocos Norte Council General Manager Mr. Cipriano Martinez III, and Laoag City Mayor Michael Keon.
