PUP urged to suspend classes on campuses near Taal Volcano

Students are urging the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) to suspend classes on campuses near Taal Volcano due to the ongoing activity of the volcano.

In a letter sent by the PUP Office of the Student Regent to PUP President Manuel M. Muhi on July 7, the students are appealing to suspend online synchronous classes in affected branches and campuses in Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) placed Taal Volcano under Alert Level 3 on July 1 following three phreatomagmatic eruptions.

At least 5,000 residents in Batangas have left their homes and sought shelter in evacuation centers.

"This event caused evacuation and disruption of life for many residents; several of whom are students of the University Branches and Campuses located in those three provinces mentioned," the letter read.

The students also asked the university to extend the submission of modules, noting that some students "have not yet received their modules or if they had, it is not the right modules."

On Thursday, July 8, Taal Volcano produced another phreatomagmatic burst that reached 200 meters high.
