Duterte 'seriously' considering VP bid

President Duterte said he was now seriously considering running for vice president in the 2022 elections but said he prefers that the winning president should be his friend or he would be reduced to inutility.

Duterte made the statement as he led a meeting with executives of the ruling PDP-Laban party and other government officials on Tuesday, July 6, where members of the party reiterated their call for the Chief Executive to run for vice president next year to ensure continuity.

In his remarks during the two-hour meeting, which had a delayed telecast on Wednesday, July 7, President Duterte said he was seriously considering heeding the call of this party-mates.

He, however, cited one dilemma.

"On the proposition that I run for Vice President, medyo (somehow) I am sold to the idea. Meaning to say I am seriously thinking of running for vice president," he said.

"But let me dwell on the reality of things: If I run for vice president tapos ang presidenteng na-elect hindi ko kaibigan (and the elected president is not my friend), the situation would arise I would remain an inutile thing there," he added.

Duterte, however, said that he would try to still be productive if that happens.

"Pero, somehow, kung nandyan ako (But, somehow, if I'm there), I will find a way to be productive and just see to it that Filipinos are not pushed to the wall," he said.

The President said thst if he does pursue a vice-presidential bid, he urged his party that they should not make promises.

"Pero 'wag na tayo mag-promise ng mga pabahay, lahat (Let us not make any promises like housing and the like). We just address the present agony and sorrow of the Filipino people," Duterte said.

Last week, President Duterte said he floated the idea of running for vice president because he did not want to be treated as a lame duck.

He added that people should start considering him as a candidate for vice president but maintained that he will only run for the said position if there would be space for him.

"Sa politiko, leverage (To a politician, this is leverage). You’d know what is a 'lame duck' kaya ikaw hindi ka talaga papayag na maging shit ka rin so nandito ka (that's why you're here because you do not want to be treated like shit)," he said.

"Maybe at this time you can say that-- maybe-- to maintain the equilibrium sa lahat (for all)-- consider me a candidate for the vice presidency at this time," he added.

However, he reiterated that he had already committed to supporting the candidacy of House Majority Leader and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez for vice president in the 2022 polls.
