Bienvenido Marañon now a Filipino citizen

The long wait is over for Bienvenido Marañon after a bill that will make him a naturalized Filipino was signed into law by President Duterte last week.

The Official Gazette published Wednesday, July 7, Republic Act 11570 which was signed by Duterte five days prior, ending a process that encountered delays following the approval of the bill by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

It would be recalled that both chambers approved their respective versions of the bill earlier in the year but encountered delays while in the process of being concurred in the House of Representatives.

The bill was transmitted to Malacanang last June 2, needing only the Chief Executive’s signature or letting it lapse after 30 days in order for the Spanish-born Marañon to officially become a Filipino citizen.

Maranon has kept a patient approach despite the delays that saw wait longer when cager Ange Kouame became a naturalized Filipino just in time for his international stint with Gilas Pilipinas.

With the process complete, Marañon will need to undergo some process such as securing a Filipino passport and to be officially registered by world governing body FIFA in order to become eligible to suit up for the Philippine Azkals.

It will also make the 35-year-old striker to be listed as a local player for United City in the ongoing AFC Champions League and the domestic Philippines Football League.
