Inflation slows in June

Consumer prices rose at a slower pace in June brought about by moderate upward price movement of transportation services, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported on Tuesday, July 6.

The country’s headline inflation slowed to 4.1 percent last month from 4.5 percent in May. The June figure was within the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ forecast of between 3.9 percent and 4.7 percent for the month.

However, latest inflation number was quicker compared with 2.5 percent in June last year.

National Statistician Claire Dennis S. Mapa said the slower inflation was primarily due to the lower annual rate of increase in the transport index at 9.6 percent from 16.5 percent in May.
