BI out to prosecute dubious company that targets foreigners

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has warned foreign nationals about a dubious company offering services such as the processing and release of travel papers in exchange for a substantial fee.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente issued the warning after getting a copy of an "advisory" from the firm, which he did not identify.

The advisory offers prospective clients various amounts for services like "airport assistance" (P5,000) and so-called "invitation letter from the Department of Foreign Affairs" (P20,000).

"We do not collect such charges," the BI chief underscored.

He has instructed his legal staff to prepare criminal charges against the people behind the fraudulent operations.

"It is disheartening that sinister individuals are taking advantage of foreign nationals by using the bureau and other government offices," Morente said.

The BI had earlier issued warnings to the public about fixers posing as immigration employees and offering assistance for fees.

He advised the public to report to the authorities if they encounter such fraudsters.
