Animal shelter group shares reminders to protect pets from ashfall amid Taal Volcano unrest

As Taal Volcano was raised to Alert Level 3 on Thursday, July 1, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) reminded the public of the need to take care of animals as it cited the incident of last year's eruption when countless animals had to endure intense suffering that includes painful and gruesome deaths.

But the group said the threats posed by Taal’s magmatic unrest to animals can be avoided if proper precautions will be followed especially in the high-risk areas.

To prevent unforeseen incidents for animals, PAWS shared five reminders for the residents in the high-risk areas with pets and livestock as a safety precaution:

• Keep them indoors, large animals should be brought into stables or some form of shelter.

• Make sure food and water bowls or troughs for farm animals are not exposed, while grass and vegetation for feeding ruminants goats, sheep, and cattle must be washed and free from ash before feeding.

• Watch out for respiratory signs such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and sneezing among others, and have them checked by a veterinarian immediately.

• If pets have been exposed, remove the ash from them by wiping or giving a bath, do not let them lick the ash.

• Sweep or wash off ashfall from yards, patios, and other outdoor areas.

“If conditions get worse and you need to evacuate your homes for safety, please take your pets with you,” the PAWS said in a Facebook post on Friday, July 2.

On Tuesday, July 6, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has observed steam-rich plumes that rose three kilometers over the main crater of the Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.

In the past 24 hours, Phivolcs also recorded 39 volcanic earthquakes, including two volcanic tremor events having durations of three to five minutes, 35 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, two hybrid earthquakes and low-level background tremor that has persisted since April 8.

The Phivolcs asked residents around Taal Lake to “calmly” prepare for possible evacuation should Taal Volcano’s unrest intensifies.
