Tropical depression "Emong" continues to move closer to the extreme northern Luzon area on Monday morning, July 5, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its bulletin.

The location of Emong was estimated at 530 kilometers east-northeast of Casiguran, Aurora or 560 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan at around 4 a.m.

It has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph while moving west-northwestward at 40 kph.

PAGASA said Emong may intensify into a tropical storm within 12 hours.

Tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 remains hoisted over Batanes and the northeastern portion of Cagayan, particularly Santa Ana and Gonzaga, including Babuyan Islands.

These areas may experience strong winds during the passage of Emong.

However, PAGASA noted that the projected track and intensity suggests the possibility of hoisting Signal No. 2 over those currently under Signal No. 1

PAGASA also warned that Emong may bring moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Batanes and Babuyan Islands from Monday evening until Tuesday noon, July 6.

"Under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, scattered flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are highly likely, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA said.

"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.

Tropical depression Emong may continue to move generally northwestward until Tuesday morning.

PAGASA said the center of the tropical depression may pass close or over the vicinity of Batanes-Babuyan Islands area Monday evening then leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday morning or afternoon.

After passing in the vicinity of extreme northern Luzon as a tropical storm, Emong may weaken into a tropical depression due to its interaction with the rugged terrain of southern Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the low pressure area (LPA) at 375 kilometers west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro and the southwest monsoon may continue to bring scattered moderate to at times heavy rains over Metro Manila, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Zambales, Bataan, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Antique, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur.

The rest of the country will have isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
