Metro Manila population protection vs COVID-19 possible by November, says DOH

The Department of Health (DOH) believes it is possible for Metro Manila to achieve population protection against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by November.

"Based on the speed and scale on how we do vaccines in NCR, there is that possibility of achieving population protection," Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online forum Monday, July 5.

"Aside from general population in NCR 50 percent vaccinated, we must achieve a high number of jabs for senior citizens and people with comorbidities. In that sense, we can say we have protected the population," she added.

But Vergeire said this is still dependent on the availability of COVID-19 vaccines.

"The average daily jabs depends on the quantity of supply and speed of the vaccination process," she said.

Vergeire also explained the "low risk" COVID classification of the country in their previous report.

"It was mentioned factually. It is really being computed. Those risk classifications are the ones really coming out of the situation reports," she said.

"When we say it's low risk for national, we need to understand what is happening across the regions. It is not just the national picture we are looking at. National low risk but many regions are still under moderate," added Vergeire.

"That's why we are saying the situation is very fragile and we should not be complacent during this time," she said.
