Hontiveros to gov't: Give proper military honors for PAF plane crash victims

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Monday, July 5 urged the government to bestow proper military honors for the soldiers who died in the C-130 plane crash in Sulu upon their burial.

Hontiveros also asked the government to ensure that all the benefits due their families would be released immediately.

“I extend my sincerest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims of the C130H plane crash in Sulu. Our hearts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. Their sacrifice and bravery to secure our freedom will never be forgotten,” Hontiveros said.

“The government should ensure that all benefits due their families will be released without delay and they be accorded the proper military honors upon burial,” she further said.

Hontiveros also expressed support for a thorough probe on the military plane crash, saying she hopes that a closer investigation on this incident will ensure the protection of the country’s brave men and women in uniform in their future deployments.

“Considering this is the second plane crash in two weeks, is a disservice to our armed services if we leave them vulnerable in battle,” she said.

“Grief this expansive calls for clarity and commitment. Let us do better in protecting the very people who protect our country,” added the lawmaker.

Sen. Imelda “Imee” Marcos, likewise, expressed her sadness on the fate that befell the young soldiers.

“It is truly heart-rending and leaves a huge void in our collective consciousness as a nation. They were supposed to be the future of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) but true to their calling, they gave their lives in the line of duty and service to our country,” Marcos said.

“Our unsung heroes spent their everyday saving lives, rescuing the injured, helping entire communities survive with food packs and medical supplies. But we couldn't save them when they needed help,” she lamented.

Marcos said it is high-time the country’s defense department reviews its military procurement deals to ensure the safety of its personnel.

“Stop buying flying coffins! No more soldiers' widows and orphans!” she stressed.
