Fenis told the Manila Bulletin that the gymnasts trained regularly after class hours at the covered court of Muzon NHS which was transformed into a temporary gymnasium with rubber mats as flooring in partnership with the creative team from Angono National High School in Angono, Rizal, teachers, and parents of Muzon NHS.
The training became a challenge for everybody since they started practicing online at the height of the pandemic with four of the students staying at the house of Fenis during the recording of the routines to ensure their safety especially when COVID-19 cases were recorded in the community where some of the kids reside.
Fenis said the routines of the gymnasts were recorded and sent online to Club Heymo in Mexico as part of the requirements in the virtual sports competition.
Most of the Rizal gymnasts came from poor families but some of them were recipients of academic excellence awards from their respective schools.
With the students' discipline and skills, Fenis said they may represent the country in other international gymnastics competition.
“Yung disiplina ang pinaka mahalagang aspeto ng training nila. Duon po tayo nakatutok kasabay ng pagpapaunlad ng skills. (Discipline was the most important aspect of their training. We focused on that alongside the development of their skills),” Fenis added.
Four other clubs in the Philippines joined the competition.
