DOST, NVSU join forces to establish ethyl alcohol production facility in Cagayan Valley
The Department Science and Technology (DOST) and the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) have joined forces in setting up an ethanol production facility (EPF) in Cagayan Valley that is capable of producing ethyl alcohol using agricultural waste, like rice and corn.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said DOST Region II, through Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC)-Nueva Vizcaya, partnered with NVSU in the establishment of the facility.
He said DOST Region II provided digital refractometer, handheld density meter, and other equipment, while NVSU provided the building facility.
The project is headed by PSTC-Nueva Vizcaya’s Provincial Director, Jonathan Nuestro, Project Leader Lori Shayne Busa, and NVSU Vice President for Research, Extension and Training Dr. Wilfredo Dumale Jr.
In its Facebook post, the DOST Region II Nueva Vizcaya said PSTC-Nueva Vizacaya’s Science Research Specialist Rommel Simbol and Project Assistant Rowena Daang were invited to actual demonstration of the production of bioethanol alcohol on May 31, 2021 at NVSU Analytical Facility.
The project entitled “Development of a novel processing facility for the conversion of agricultural products to ethyl alcohol” is funded by DOST Region II’s Grants-In-Aid (GIA) program in 2020.
During the activity, Busa introduced the stages of alcohol production which includes preparation, two pre-treatment processes, sterilization , fermentation, distillation and packaging.
