With ECQ in place, Metro Manila's daily COVID-19 cases seen to reach below 2,500 - OCTA fellow

A member of the OCTA Research group estimated that the imposition of the two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila may control the increase in infections in the region amid the threat of the Delta variant.

The National Capital Region (NCR) will be placed under the strictest quarantine classification from August 6 to 20 to contain the rising number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases and prevent the spread of the highly contagious variant.

“Ang projections namin (Our projections), with the ECQ, mako-control natin (we can control) to less than 2,500 cases per day in the NCR,” OCTA fellow Guido David said in an interview over CNN Philippines on Saturday, July 31.

“That is below surge capacity, which means, hindi mao-overwhelm ang hospitals (hospitals will not be overwhelmed) based on the projections,” he added.

The expert believes that there might be more cases of the highly infectious variant across the country, as compared to the number of cases reported by the Department of Health (DOH).

He explained that this is because the resources of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) to conduct genome sequencing of COVID-19 samples are limited.

While the Delta variant is more infectious, the research fellow noted that most of the coronavirus variants that have been detected in the country are Alpha and Beta variants.

With this, David underscored the importance of strict observance to the minimum public health standards.

“Any sort of protection that we can use or any intervention that will increase our protection will help,” he said.
