Victolero lauds Barroca for stepping up sans injured star Paul Lee

Magnolia coach Chito Victolero cited that the veteran experience of Mark Barroca is an instrumental factor for the team's 105-83 win against the TerraFirma Dyip in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City Friday, July 30.

Sans Paul Lee, who suffered a minor leg injury in the second quarter and had to be taken out early in the game, Barroca stepped up for the Hotshots by posting 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a steal.

"Mark Barroca stepped up with the absence of Paul. Kasi medyo nagkaroon ng kaunting injury si Paul. It's just a precautionary measure para hindi lumalala... good think 'yong andyan si Mark, veteran," said Victolero of the seasoned franchise guard.

"He's young... ano pa yan, mga 10 to 12 years pa yan si Mark," he jested.

The Magnolia tactician, however, attributed the win to the team's overall effort, the defense it showed against Terrafirma, and the mindset heading into the 46th season of the PBA.

The Hotshots outrebounded the Dyip, 47-35, which also enabled 12 second chance points for Magnolia.

"It's all about our defense. 'yon naman 'yong pinag-usapan namin. We want to respect this team, the Terrafirma and also the proper mindset," said the 2018 Governor's Cup champion coach.

"On the last three days na prinepare namin, 'yon lagi 'yong teaching ko. Bibibigyan ko ng emphasis 'yong mindset going into this game. Tha's very imporant. We don't want na mag-relax kami."

The Hotshots remained undefeated in four straight games to claim the solo spot at No. 1.
