Slaughter has good future with NorthPort, says Cone

Ginebra coach Tim Cone sees a good future for his former player Greg Slaughter with the NorthPort Batang Pier.

Cone took notice of how Slaughter made the adjustments needed in making a dynamic duo with NorthPort guard Robert Bolick.

While Bolick and Slaughter gave them a hard time in Ginebra's 87-85 win in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City Friday, July 30, the winningest PBA coach was all praises for the two Batang Pier players.

"Things are going to work really well," assessed Cone. "That 1-2 punch of Bolick and Greg is just gonna grow and get better and I think they're gonna be a contender. They lost by San Miguel by two points by the last second shot of Arwind and now they lost again by two points in the last second shot by Christian.

"So those shots eventually are not gonna make it and they're gonna win a basketball game as long as they continue the way they're playing. They're gonna be tougher. They have a good future. I love that 1-2 of those two guys -- Bolick and Slaughter."

Bolick posted 23 points, four rebounds, four rebounds, and a steal while Slaughter chalked up 16 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Cone also lauded his former center for putting up an impressive performance against San Miguel's June Mar Fajardo previously and their very own Japeth Aguilar and Christian Standhardinger, who got traded to NorthPort in exchange for the 7-foot Slaughter.

"Greg is playing really well. He's very active on the floor. He spend a lot of time during off time. We're really working on his game and I know the coach he's worked with and I know that he's a really good skills coach, a development coach," said the 23-time PBA champion coach. "He's (Slaughter) brought some more weapons to his game and he was absolutely dominant against San Miguel."

Against the Beermen last Sunday, Slaughter, who missed the first two games with the Batang Pier, stepped up with a double-double performance of 23 points and 17 rebounds and an assist in his NorthPort debut.

NorthPort is currently tied with the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters at 1-3 record.
