Robredo cheers on Petecio, Paalam, Obiena in Olympic medal quest

Vice President Leni Robredo is one big fan of the Filipino athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics.

Robredo first sent her congratulations to Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio after she defeated her Italian opponent in the featherweight boxing semifinals Saturday.

Petecio, 29, is now a win away from giving the Philippines another Olympic gold medal since she will advance to the championship round.

Early this week, Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz made history when she brought home the country's first-ever gold medal at the Olympics. Diaz beat her Chinese rival in the women's 55-kilogram weightlifting event and set an Olympic record with a total lift of 224 kgs.

In a post on Twitter, Robredo said she was excited for the country's potential second gold medal in the Olympics following Petecio's triumph.

"Ibang klase!!! Maraming salamat, Nesthy, at excited kami sa susunod nating Olympic gold (You're a different class! Thank you Nesthy and we're excited about our next Olympic gold)," Robredo tweeted Saturday, July 31.

The vice president also lauded two other Filipino athletes who won in their respective sporting events at the Tokyo Games. He wished other athletes triumph too, saying the nation will remains proud of them.

"Congratulations rin kina EJ Obiena at Carlo Paalam sa pag-advance sa kani-kanilang sporting events today! (Congratulations to EJ Obiena and Carlo Paalam on advancing in their respective sporting events today!)," she said.

"Proud kami sa inyo — at patuloy na magdadasal at magchi-cheer para sa inyo at sa iba pa nating Pinoy athletes na sumasabak sa Olympics (We are proud of you and we will continue to pray and cheer for you and other Filipino athletes competing in the Olympics)," she added.

Obiena has advanced to the finals of the men's pole vault event at the Tokyo Games after clearing 5.75 meters on his third attempt at Tokyo Games’s Olympic Stadium.

Paalam won against Algerian boxer Mohamed Flissi, securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the men's flyweight division.
