Metro Manila mayors pushed for higher quarantine status---Mayor Marcy

To contain the highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant, Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro said he and other mayors of Metro Manila pushed for a higher quarantine status.

He said such will be needed in order to avoid the surge in COVID-19 cases projected by health experts.

Malacanang has announced on Friday that Metro Manila will be placed under the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) on August 6-20, 2021.

The National Capital Region (NCR) will be under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions until August 5.

“A change in the quarantine status, from GCQ to ECQ, will be able to address the concerns of the mayors, in order to contain the Delta variant for us to avoid the projection given to us by health experts especially by the DOH (Department of Health), with the increase and surge that we are expecting,” he said during a n interview with Teleradyo.

Teodoro said that, like other cities in the metropolis, Marikina City has experienced a sudden increase in COVID-19 cases.

“For example in Marikina, two to three cases only per day last week, but yesterday we registered 25 cases. This is a significant increase in the number of cases. I think all of the Metro Manila cities are similarly situated as Marikina,” he said.

Metro Manila mayors, according to the mayor, had expressed their preparedness should the national government impose the strictest quarantine status in the metropolis.

“To be direct about it, the Metro Manila mayors had expressed the readiness of Metro Manila cities for an ECQ," he said.

Teodoro said the government must provide financial aid to people, and provide more vaccines to ramp up inoculation against COVID-19 during ECQ.

He said that vaccination must continue during ECQ as it is very vital in the fight against the dreaded disease.

Taking into consideration the marginalized sector and daily wage earners, Teodoro said they must be provided financial assistance.

“Ayuda is important for daily wage earners, kailangan talaga as a means for them to survive (Financial aid is very important for minimum wage earners, they badly need it for them to survive),” the mayor said.
