Indonesian town offers live chickens to those who get vaccinated

To combat the threat of COVID-19, countries around the globe are rolling out vaccination programs to protect the population. But some citizens don’t feel compelled to receive the shots. 

As a way to encourage people to get vaccinated, some countries have started giving out incentives. An Indonesian town’s incentive is giving out live chickens to elderly residents for getting vaccinated against COVID-19. 

The idea was sparked after local authorities saw a low turnout due to fear of the virus. Now, authorities visit elderly residents’ homes without prior notice, ready to hand out vaccines and chickens to compliant citizens.

Data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Health shows that only five percent of the country, or 8.8 million people, have been fully vaccinated, far from their target of 181.5 million people by the end of the year. 

With this new incentive, the Indonesian authorities hope to increase the numbers in the coming months.
