Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano has signed a resolution supporting the move to place the National Capital Region (NCR) under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for two weeks due to the increasing number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases and the threat of the Delta variant.

Cayetano and 16 other mayors under the Metro Manila Council (MMC) unanimously signed Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Resolution 21-15 on Wednesday requesting the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases to place the NCR under ECQ, the strictest quarantine status.

Dr. Manuel Mapue II, chief of the Department of Health (DOH)-National Capital Region Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, disclosed Wednesday during the “Laging Handa” public briefing that there are now 25 Delta variant cases in Metro Manila.

He said that of the 25 Delta cases, 10 are in Manila, seven in Pasig, San Juan has two, and one case each in Taguig, Las Pinas, Makati, Malabon, Quezon City, and Paranaque. Of the total, eight have recovered, one died, and 16 are active cases.

Taguig recorded 60 new COVID-19 cases on July 27. There are 372 active cases in the city out of 30,250 confirmed cases, 29,596 recoveries, and 282 deaths.

The city government has reminded the public to strictly follow health and safety protocols in light of the possible surge in COVID-19 cases in the city due to the Delta variant.

In a bulletin dated July 21, the Taguig Safe City Task Force stated, “In Taguig City, as of 12 July 2021, the City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CEDSU), has recorded a total of seventy-three (73) COVID-19 cases that are Variants of Concern (VOC), including one (1) Delta variant case of a returning OFW last May.”

In the MMDA resolution, the mayors noted that “health experts project a further increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the NCR to 11,000 daily cases by the end of September, 2021, based on the assumption that the Delta Variant is sixty percent (60%) more transmissible and the Prevent-Detect-Isolate-Treat-Reintegrate (PDITR) strategies and vaccination performance being held at status quo.”

The mayors said they are willing to place the NCR under ECQ for two weeks “should the National Government have available funds for a Social Amelioration Program (SAP) to be distributed to the underprivileged individuals and families.”
