Phivolcs: No tsunami threat to PH after 8.2-magnitude quake in Alaska

There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following the 8.2-magnitude that struck Alaska on Thursday, July 29, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.

The agency issued a tsunami advisory after a shallow 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chignik, Alaska at 2:15 p.m.

It urged residents in coastal communities in some parts of the country to wait for updates following a strong earthquake near Alaska.

“An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours,” Phivolcs said in a previous advisory.
