Magno succumbs to Thai foe, bows out of Tokyo Olympics

Irish Magno bid farewell to her Olympic campaign after suffering a unanimous decision loss at the hands of Thai foe Jitpong Jutamas in their Round of 16 women's boxing flyweight match in the 2020 Tokyo Games at the Tokyo International Forum Thursday, July 29.

All five judges scored in favor of Jutamas after dominating Magno all three rounds, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27.

Jutamas, 23, played smart with her technical approach, dodging every counterpunch from the 28-year-old Magno.

Jutamas started the bout strong, using her reach advantage to calculate Magno's punches and tempo before throwing a series of counterpunches of her own.

The Filipino boxer did little to no damage except at the 1:24 marker of the second round where Magno unloaded a flurry of punches but wasn't not enough to impress the judges.

In the waning seconds, Jutamas, who was all smiles all throughout the match, landed a sneaky uppercut on Magno with around 11 seconds to go.

In the third round, Jutamas fought safer and did the same tactic in the first frame to secure the win, luring Magno to throw punches of desperation first before unloading counterstrikes.

Magno, a two-time Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, was the first boxer to bow out of the Tokyo Games.

Others still in contention are Nesthy Petecio, who is already assured of a bronze medal, Eumir Felix Marcial, who earlier advanced in the quarterfinals, and Carlo Paalam, who will face Mohamed Flissi of Algeria on July 31, Saturday, in their Round of 16 flyweight match.

Jitpong will next face Tursunoy Rakhimova of Uzbekistan, who earlier pulled an upset win over top-seeded Turkish boxer Buse Naz Cakiroglu via split decision.
