Coastal communities in 22 provinces told to monitor updates after 8.2-magnitude Alaska quake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday, July 29, has urged residents in coastal communities in some parts of the country to wait for updates following a strong earthquake near Alaska.

The state agency issued a “sea-level change monitoring” advisory after a shallow 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chignik, Alaska at 2:15 p.m.

“An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours,” Phivolcs said.

With this development, coastal communities in the following provinces have been advised to wait for updates from authorities:

Batanes Group of Islands

Cagayan

Ilocos Norte

Isabela

Quezon

Aurora

Camarines Norte

Camarines Sur

Albay

Catanduanes

Sorsogon

Eastern and Northern Samar

Leyte

Southern Leyte

Surigao del Norte

Surigao del Sur

Davao Oriental

Davao De Oro

Davao del Norte

Davao del Sur

Davao Occidental

State seismologists noted that “no evacuation is in order” as of this time.
