TESDA says more than 580K OFWs assisted by online training program

More than 580,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been assisted by the online training program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

"We have 100 courses available in our TESDA online training program. As of now, we have assisted 586,000 through this program," TESDA Deputy Director General Aniceto Bertiz said during the Laging Handa public briefing Wednesday, July 28.

The agency had reported that over 1.5 million individuals have availed of the TESDA Online Program (TOP) since the implementation of the community quarantine.

TOP is an open educational resource that aims to make technical vocational education and training (TVET) more accessible to Filipinos and widen their chances of employment or sources of livelihood.

Bertiz said 383,000 returning OFWs were also assisted through the one-stop service center for OFWs.

"All our regional offices have Malasakit Desk fpe OFWs," he said.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapeña vowed to put more emphasis on the upskilling and retooling of workers.

"As co-chair of the NERS Task Force, we have committed our scholarship programs to address the skills gaps and increase the employability of our workers," he said.

"We will continue to be more accesible to our target clients as embodied in our guiding principle 'TESDA Abot Lahat,'" added Lapeña.
