Out of joy

REFLECTIONS TODAY When Moses comes down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the commandments, the Israelites noticed how radiant his face had become (Ex 34:30). Having had intimacy with God, the divine radiance is reflected on his face. The Israelites have then an experience of the supernatural beauty—the kabod or glory of God. In the Gospel, Jesus uses the metaphor of a buried treasure and a pearl of great price to emphasize the unique beauty and blessing of the Kingdom of heaven. One who truly understands its value and has a glimpse or taste of it will remain restless until he can take possession of it. One takes risks by letting go of one’s possessions, but it is a risk worth taking. All others pale before it, like man’s glory before the radiance that emanates from Moses’ face that makes the Israelites fear to come near him.

GOSPEL • MATTHEW 13:44-46

Jesus said to his disciples: “The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.
