Muntinlupa City Council to pass resolution honoring Olympic gold medalist Diaz

The Muntinlupa City Council will pass a resolution to honor weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who made history by winning the Philippines’ first ever gold medal at the Olympics.

Majority Floor Leader Raul Corro said the resolution will be discussed during the City Council’s next session on Monday.

Diaz won the country’s first gold medal on July 26 at the Tokyo Olympics when she ruled the women’s 55-kg weightlifting category with a total lift of 224 kg, which set an Olympic record. Diaz also set an Olympic record in the clean and jerk stage of the competition with a lift of 127 kg.

Her win ended the Philippines’ 97-year gold medal drought since the country started participating in the Summer Olympics in 1924.

In winning the gold medal, Diaz beat world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China, who took the silver medal with a lift of 223 kg while Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan won bronze with 213 kg.

Diaz won a silver medal in the 53-kg weightlifting category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In her first post on Instagram on July 28 since bagging the gold medal, Diaz wrote, "Di Ako Makapaniwala. Di ako makapaniwala na nandito ako ngayon sa Olympics. Di ako makapaniwala na matutuloy ang Olympics. Di ako makapaniwala na nandito ang TeamHD. Di ako makapaniwala na Gold Medalist ako sa Olympics. (I can’t believe it. I can’t believe I am here in the Olympics. I can’t believe that the Olympics would push through. I can’t believe that TeamHD is here. I can’t believe that I am a gold medalist in the Olympics).”

She added, “Kung ako lang ito, di ko ito magagawa parang impossible. Salamat God sa pagdala ng mga tao, government support, private support, pamilya, kaibigan at prayer warriors para magawa ko ito at maging possible. (I could not have done this, it is impossible for me to do it alone. Thank you God for bringing people, government support, private support, family, friends and prayers warriors for me to make this happen and become possible).”

“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible,’ Matthew 19:26,” she wrote.
