With Japan considered "closer than a brother," President Duterte is looking forward to the country's deepening ties between its strategic partner.

The President has lauded the robust and "extraordinary" relations between Japan and Philippines, saying the "shared future remains bright."

The two countries mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year, celebrating decades of solidarity, mutual respect and understanding.

"As I have said, time and again, Japan is a friend closer than a brother. Only a handful of our bilateral relationships have been deeply as transformative as the one we have in Japan. I am confident that the Japan-Philippine strategic partnership will continue to strengthen as our people-to-people linkages continue to deepen," he said in a message celebrating the Philippine-Japan ties.

"In celebrating the 65th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, let us honor the legacy of the extraordinary relationship between our country and Japan," he said.

The President recognized that Japan is unrivaled in its status as one of the Philippines' "most valued partner." The relations between the two countries have been marked with triumphs since 1956, he noted.

"Another mutual decision to move forward while continuing to be aware of our shared meaningful history has truly been a gift of timeless value to our peoples," he said.

He likewise wished anew Japan success on its hosting of the Olympics this year.

"Amidst the ongoing pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics, the Paralympic Games have now become an enduring symbol of humanity's unbowed spirit. We wish Japan success in this endeavor," he said.

Looking ahead, the President is confident about strengthening relations between the two allies.

"Our shared future remains bright and the horizon continues to ever expand. There are many promises that can still be fulfilled," he said.

Last May, the President had a "warm, engaging and productive" phone conversation with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, tackling issues such as the coronavirus pandemic and maritime security.

Duterte thanked Japan for its assistance to the country in responding to the coronavirus outbreak. Suga, in turn, expressed support for the Philippine government's efforts to address the pandemic.

The two leaders also tackled the South China Sea issue and agreed to work closely to ensure security and stability in the region. Both leaders likewise agreed to boost cooperation to fight piracy, terrorism, and other transnational crimes in the Sulu and Celebes Seas.
