The son of man

REFLECTIONS TODAY
Moses’ greatness flows from his intimacy with God. On entering the meeting tent, the Lord would speak to him face to face (Ex 33:11). At his death, he is given this accolade: “Since then no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. He had no equal in all the signs and wonders the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt…” (Dt 34:10-11). In turn, the Gospel presents Jesus as one greater than Moses. Moses is a servant in the house of God, while Jesus is the son and heir. Referring to the harvest at the end of the age, Jesus will sit in judgment as the glorious Son of Man. The time given to people is over and they will be judged according to their deeds. This time, the weeds and the wheat will be separated, the weeds set to the fiery furnace while the wheat will shine like the sun in God’s Kingdom.
GOSPEL • Mt 13:36-43
Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom. The weeds are the children of the Evil One, and the enemy who sows them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his Kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”
