PH chessers dominate UAE tourney

The Philippine chess team dominated the International Chess Day Blitz Tournament 2021 after clinching the Top 4 finishes at the Dubai Chess & Culture Club in the United Arab Emirates recently.

International Master Oliver Dimakiling spearheaded the PH team’s charge by capturing the title with 8.5 points in the over-the-board tournament featuring 31 players from seven nations.

Dimakiling downed Woman Grandmaster Mahri Geldiyeva of Turkmenistan in the ninth and final round to seal the victory.

John Vincent Cayaba came in second with 7 points while Dandel Fernandez settled for third after tiebreaks were applied following a three-way tie with teammate Nelman Lagutin and India’s Kush Devnani for 6.5 points.

Rounding up the Top 10 were John-John Mendoza for sixth place, UAE’s Abdulla Murad, Rocky Pabalan, Winnie Felix and Francis Erwin Dimarucut.
