On top of monetary incentives, Hidilyn Diaz to be feted with Olympic Gold Medal of Valor

When it rains, it pours.

On top of monetary incentives and accolades, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz will also be receiving the Olympic Gold Medal of Valor for winning the country’s first gold medal during the Tokyo Games.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced this Tuesday, less than a day before Diaz finally ended the country’s Olympic gold-medal dry spell when she ruled the women’s 55kg division.

According to Republic Act 10699 or the expanded incentives act, the winner of an Olympic and Paralympic gold will receive the said medal on top of the monetary incentives.

In the case of Diaz, she will receive P10 million from the government.

Private sectors and the local government unit of Zamboanga City where Diaz was born and raised are also giving her monetary rewards worth millions.

The PSC has already prepared the said medal accordingly and is looking into awarding it alongside the monetary incentives, usually given out by the President himself, in a courtesy call in Malacañang.

This is a long-time provision of the law which the country never had the chance to follow, but is now set to be implemented for the first time with Diaz's historic and record-breaking victory.

The design is still under wraps, but will be given honor to both sports and the nation's symbols.
