Muntinlupa Rep. Biazon praises Diaz for Olympic gold: 'This woman can lift twice my weight!'

Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon congratulated weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who won for the Philippines its first ever gold medal at the Olympics.

At the Tokyo Olympics on July 26, Diaz ruled the women’s 55-kg weightlifting category with a total lift of 224 kg, which set an Olympic record. She also set an Olympic record in the clean and jerk stage of the competition with a lift of 127 kg.

Diaz edged out world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China, who settled for a silver medal with a lift of 223 kg while Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan won bronze with 213 kg.

Diaz won a silver medal in the 53-kg weightlifting category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Five years ago, she brought honor to the country with an Olympic silver medal. This time, not only did she win the gold medal, she even set an Olympic record!” posted Biazon on Facebook along with a photo with Diaz.

He added, “To give you an idea of what she can do, here we are together and you can see the size difference. I weigh 105 kg while she lifted 224 kg to win the gold and set the record! This woman can lift twice my weight!”

“Congratulations, Hidilyn Diaz! A truly great accomplishment for the country and women,” he said.

Diaz trended at No. 1 in the Philippines on Twitter after her historic Olympic win.
